In 2007 Pioneer took a decision to diversify its commodity profile. As a result of this decision the company has generated advanced prospects in gold and manganese to complement its traditional business in sulphide nickel exploration. The company has an active policy of ‘invest or divest’ which focuses the company on its core projects, and farming out projects that do not fit the company’s criteria to explorers.

Pioneer is in joint venture with Australian Mines Limited (AUZ) to explore and develop nickel sulphide resources within the Golden Ridge Joint Venture (GRJV). The immediate Blair Sulphide Nickel Mine area (operated by AUZ) is excluded from the GRJV, as are all gold rights. Currently Pioneer hold 56% interest in the joint venture with AUZ equity being 44%.

The Joint Venture completed a surface geophysical EM survey that tested the “Western Ultramafic Unit” at the Jubilee West Prospect. The survey was undertaken to provide improved target resolution for future drilling, and modelling is in progress. The joint venture recently reported a drilling intersection of 9.55 m at 0.98% Ni and 362 ppm Cu from the Jubilee West Prospect.

Pioneer recently announced that it had sold an 80% interest in the Pioneer Project to Panoramic Resources Limited. The project is located approximately 30 km NNW of Norseman and 140 km S of Kalgoorlie and contains ultramafic stratigraphy that correlates with the mine sequences at Miitel, Redross and Mt Edwards Nickel Sulphide mines. Panoramic are actively exploring the surrounding ground for nickel sulphide mineralisation.
